Queensland references — and the work licence application
Queensland is unique: alongside ordinary sentencing references, drink drivers within the eligible range can apply for a work licence (restricted licence) — and that application runs on sworn evidence, not just goodwill letters.
Ordinary character references in QLD
Same conventions as elsewhere: "To the Presiding Magistrate, [venue] Magistrates Court", acknowledge the charge, concrete examples, no penalty suggestions, one signed page. Queensland courts can order that no conviction be recorded — character evidence goes directly to that discretion.
The work licence application is different
To apply you must be eligible (e.g. BAC under 0.15, licence not suspended/disqualified recently, offence not while driving for work in certain licence classes) and the application must be made before the disqualification is imposed — usually at the sentencing hearing itself. The evidence is by affidavit: yours, setting out why you are a fit and proper person and the hardship (job loss, family destitution) without the licence; and typically your employer's affidavit confirming the driving requirement and that dismissal would follow. A plain reference letter cannot substitute for the affidavits, but supporting references strengthen the "fit and proper person" limb.
Practical sequence
Get legal advice immediately (work licence eligibility has traps); prepare affidavits before the court date; have referees' letters ready as supporting exhibits; and do not plead guilty before the application is ready — once disqualified, it is too late.

Frequently asked questions
Who can apply for a work licence in Queensland?
Broadly: current open licence holders, BAC below 0.15, no relevant disqualifications or convictions in the last 5 years, and the licence must be genuinely needed to earn a living. Eligibility rules are strict — get advice.
Is an employer letter enough for a QLD work licence?
No — the application requires sworn affidavits from you and usually your employer. Reference letters play a supporting role.
When must the work licence application be filed?
Before disqualification is imposed — in practice, prepared before your sentencing date and made at that hearing.
